Sunday NaN-Row

Standard

How is NaNo going? Well, I’m on task so far. Thursday my pc shut off and I lost an entire 2k chapter. Friday I spent it rewriting and adding in the words I needed to make Friday’s goal. Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway) I was a wee bit stressed. BUT I’m back on track and plugging away. For a treat I thought I’d put the first chapter of my prologue up and each Row/NaNo update this month will include an excerpt of a particular favorite part of the story. Just because.

Midnight in the Hollows ~ Prologue excerpt

The Captain looked over the deck slick with water and littered with his men and sighed. For a moment he watched them scurry about like ants over a sugared bit. It was a fitting description, for weren’t they all just as small and meaningless as those tiny creatures? Still, it saddened him to see them fighting so hard, the rain pelting their oiled cloaks, the salt from the sea stinging their eyes as the darkness moved ever closer.

Lightening cracked murderous through the night lighting the scene before him. He gripped the rope tighter, the water sluicing between his fingers.

“Cap’n!” He snapped his head toward the sound of his First Mate, Barnaby. The roar of thunder drowned out the young man’s shouted words but he understood. They were taking on too much water. The other ship was gaining.

I’ve finished another chapter + in Nancy Kress’s book, I’ve kept up with my ROW80 peeps and even worked out a time or two. This month my school is on hold for the most part unless I get a good bit head on NaNo but I did do 2 test in 1 class leaving only 8 and ordered my next set of book for the very last class. Everything is set for when I finish NaNo. My goal is finals by the new year.

How is everyone else doing? Any thoughts on my excerpt?

  1. Ohh how awful losing 2k of work! Glad you managed to pull it back but I can understand how devastating it must have been to have to re-do it! I like the excerpt, will be good to find out more! 🙂

  2. That’s horrible losing 2k. *makes a mental note to back everything up*

Great excerpt! I want to read more! Written well with interesting descriptions 🙂

    • yeah I have everything backed up ever 24 hrs, autosaved every 2 seconds. The program corrupted my 2nd chapter when the laptop plug wasn’t put in all the way and it shut off mid typing. There’s no going back after that.

Thanks for the kind words on my excerpt! I’m really trying to put all these tips and tricks to good use 🙂

  3. I just backed everything up after reading your post! Glad you’ve caught up, even with that setback. The excerpt is interesting, will be nice to see more. Happy thoughts for week two of NaNo!

  4. That’s so awful losing those words! I’ve never had that happen on a WIP, only on emails and blogs. No matter how much you back up, you can’t help losing something when the computer shuts down. Microsoft Word autosaves constantly, but it’s not perfect. Files get corrupted. I’m glad you didn’t freak out and decide to quit! 🙂

Good luck with NaNo. I love your excerpt with the great descriptive writing you’re so good at!

  5. I’m really glad to hear you didn’t let the 2k loss stop you. I know what it’s like to lose that much work but I’ve found when I re-write it, it turns out much better for it in the end. Let’s hope that’s the end of your stress for this month.

  6. I will echo everyone else, good job redoing the 2k you lost. I have had that happen, not with that many words, but ouch!

I like your excerpt, and can’t wait to see more. Good job keeping the balance among all the things you are juggling.

  7. O.O There is nothing worse than losing that much. I know I’ve been ready to sit down and cry my eyes out and then write like crazy to make it back up…and then more to stay on track.

    • oh yeah, I had a meltdown on Twitter. I’m still disappointed I’m just *barely* over my word count goal for today and didn’t even make my daily word count (have the goal for day 6 but didn’t make the 1667 words today). I was really hoping this weekend would give me a big boost since hubby was away and I had nothing else to do. 😦

  8. Nan-Row! I like it. Congrats on keeping up – I’m sure it’s stressful, but you seem to have a handle on things, Cap’n. And dang the loss of those 2k words. I’m having a small vigil for them. That’s the *worst* !!

    Cheers,
    Gina

  9. Brava! I love how you are sharing excerpts… and it so sucks when stuff gets lost and can’t be restored easily.

Glad to hear you’ve got a plan and are following it!

    I didn’t even get my ROW80 blog post written…. ugh…..
